Work in Progress Wednesday #16!

I think I missed another week…darn. Can’t keep up with blogging! (I’m making up for it with two posts today!)

The big news, which I’ve already shared in my post for the Bloggers’ Quilt Festival, is that I finally finished my second quilt! It’s my Rainbow New Wave, a quilt top I finished months ago but was dragging on finishing up the binding. I love it and I’m keeping it for myself!

I also made another iPhone case with this super-easy tutorial from Apple Blue, with the additions of a fusible fleece interface and a few quilting lines to better secure the Velcro. I used some of my precious Daiwabo Elephants, the thicker canvassy kind.

Bloggers’ Quilt Festival – New Completed Quilt!

I’m linking up to the Bloggers’ Quilt Festival with my second completed quilt! (And I’m also linking up to the Manic Monday Linky Party and the {Sew} Modern Monday link-up.)

This is my second completed quilt, and I’m in love with it. I call it the Rainbow New Wave (super creative, huh?).

I made the quilt top while I was still in the midst of making my niece’s much more complex string quilt and I wanted some instant gratification – I love the simplicity of this pattern from Elizabeth Hartman, it was so quick to cut and piece! I was relatively new to quilting and just starting to build my stash – I had ordered a stack of fabric from Form & Fabric and realized when it came that it included at least one fabric in each color of the rainbow. I decided to use the stack to make myself a quilt (I had to add a few other fabrics from my stash as well). I completed the quilt top in no time, but then I had to finish up my niece’s graduation quilt and put off quilting and binding the New Wave quilt for months! I just finally finished it a few days ago.

I’m especially excited because I’m keeping this quilt for myself! It incorporates a lot of my favorite designers and fabrics (Anna Maria Horner, Jay McCarroll, Amy Butler…)

These pictures don’t really do it justice…I should have smoothed it down more, it looks kind of puffy. I need a helper to hold it up for me so I can take better pictures!

I quilted two lines through all the white stripes with white thread on top and colored on the back. I like the strong graphic lines that created on the solid gray back. I added squares of each fabric I used to spice up the back a little!

Work in Progress Wednesday #11!

This week, I finished the quilting on my Rainbow New Wave, created the binding strips (chose a rainbow of solids), and I’m partway through attaching the binding. I’m so excited to be almost finished with this quilt!

I also finished my little Farmer’s Wife Century of Progress potholder, which I brought into our office kitchen because we really needed one. Everyone seems to like it! One of my co-workers told me I should feel free to make her a quilt, if I feel so inclined. (Does she not realize how much work that is?!?) And I finished my little hexagon mug rug, which is a little small for a mug rug, but I like keeping it by my sewing machine to set my scissors on, so I don’t scratch my dining room table. So it’s a scissors rug.

Work in Progress Wednesday #10! (missed a week)

I missed a week of WiP Wednesday last week…I really didn’t have ANY progress to report on. But this week I had some sewing time! I finally basted and started quilting my rainbow New Wave quilt, a top I finished months ago. I really love this quilt, and I’m so excited that I’m keeping it for myself! I’m quilting it through the white stripes with white thread on top and a rainbow of different threads on the bottom, which looks cool, but it is a pain to have to change the bobbin all the time! I’m hoping to finish the quilting today or tomorrow and then I’ll post a photo of the whole thing!

I already blogged about my foray into the Farmer’s Wife obsession…I still need to turn that little block into a potholder. (I also organized all my threads, including about 30 spools that I inherited from my grandmother!)

And I already blogged about my decision to join the Dead Simple Quilt Along from the Lily’s Quilts blog, and I picked my color palette and started thinking about fabric choices.

Work in Progress Wednesday #2!

I’ve made a lot of progress this week!

Quilt tops completed, ready to be quilted and bound:

Maddie’s graduation quilt – quilt top FINISHED! I was so excited to finally finish all 36 blocks and lay them out. It’s been a long time coming. I took some black and white photos to help myself see if the dark fabrics were evenly distributed throughout the layout.

I sewed together all the blocks on Sunday and Monday. I really like how it turned out, and I think my niece will like it too. I’m terrified to start quilting, though, because I’ve been working on this for SO LONG and I’m afraid I’ll screw it up! I really need to get moving on it, because my goal is to finish it before my trip to Maine for the 4th of July, which is going to be tough because I have so much going on in the next ten days or so. I only have one weekend left between now and then.

New Wave rainbow quilt – quilt top FINISHED! I absolutely love this and I’m so glad I’m keeping it for myself! I also think it’s kinda neat that there are two fabrics that are in both Maddie’s graduation quilt and my rainbow quilt (the blue Anna Maria Horner woodcut print and the mustard Michael Miller Ta Dot print). It’s like the two quilts are related! I’m working on a fun backing for this one that will showcase the rainbow selection of fabrics in a different way.

Central Park log cabin quilt – no progress on this, still needs to be quilted.  I’m pushing to finish the string quilt and then I will revisit this one.

Small projects

I already blogged about the little zipper pouch I made last week, and I also made a makeup roll using this pattern from Rachel’s blog Stitched in Color. It’s a great pattern. Wish I had been a little more careful about lining up the pockets, everything is a bit off center, but oh well. I’m sure I’ll make this pattern again! I used a poppy fabric from Laura Gunn which I love, love, love – I’m a sucker for big bold florals!
