I’ve been amassing a lot of zipper pouch tutorials on Pinterest lately (click here to see my board). I have all these strips left over from the secret solids project, so I decided to make a stripey boxed pouch using this tutorial. It’s nice and roomy and I love the colors! The solids are Kona Stone (my favorite neutral), Windsor (an awesome deep blue), and Deep Violet (the purple). The navy and aqua print is from Denyse Schmidt’s latest line at Jo-Anns, the purple and white print is of course from the Echo collection by Lotta Jansdotter, the peachy crosshatch is from Timeless Treasures (I think), and the lining is from Anna Maria Horner’s Innocent Crush line. I am on a major AMH kick.

The tutorial was very well done – easy to follow and it was a satisfyingly quick project! It would have been even quicker if I hadn’t quilted it so densely. If I could do it all over again (which I probably will), I’ll use a stiffer interfacing rather than batting to give the pouch a little more structure, and I’ll have the outer neutral stripes be wider so the colored stripes at either end aren’t almost cut off by the boxed corners.

The colors are a bit truer in this photo which was taken in natural lighting.

This week’s sewing focused mostly on my sister’s birthday gifts – I finished the wonky starburst mug rug and also made a gathered clutch using this Noodlehead tutorial. I struggled with the interfacing and I’m not totally thrilled with how it came out (the stripe on the front is a bit OFF), but I want to try it again because it’s so cute and a perfect size!

The yellow floral fabric used to be a Target napkin, shhh!

I made a little bit of progress on the Central Park HST baby quilt, and I also started on making some pillows for the baby’s big siblings. This disappearing 9 patch block will become a pillow for the baby’s big sister:

I’m still working on binding the Rainbow New Wave quilt.

Last but not least, the stuff I haven’t touched this week:

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

I had a really productive week! Mostly small projects, working on binding a bigger quilt, and starting a new baby quilt!

I made a wonky starburst mug rug for my sister’s birthday gift using this tutorial (still need to quilt and bind it):

I had all these leftovers after trimming down the blocks:

Which I turned into a Starburst Leftovers mug rug!

I already blogged about the doggie applique potholder I made using my new Go Baby fabric cutter, which I am still totally enamored with!

I also used the Go Baby to cut a pack of Central Park charms and strips of white fabric into 3″ finished half square triangles and got started on a new baby quilt! It really made cutting triangles so quick and easy. I love the Central Park fabric so much! Hopefully the colors are gender-neutral enough, I’m making it for friends who won’t be finding out the sex of their baby until it’s born (Leap Day 2012 is the due date!). (Side note – I really need a design wall…I had to lay all these HSTs out on the floor and my dog kept walking over them and messing up the design!)

I used this pleated pouch tutorial to make two zipper pouches – one mini to use to hold my supplies for binding quilts (tiny scissors, needles, thread, binding clips) and one normal sized to give to my sister as part of birthday gift:

I’m determined not to start another quilt until I’ve finished the two that are underway (both overdue gifts), but that doesn’t mean I can’t dream about all the great tutorials and quilt-alongs I can’t wait to start on! Here are a few that have been catching my eye:

Me? A Mom?‘s Urban Lattice (this one is kinda similar to the string quilt I’m working on, but seems so much more manageable and so elegant!)

Oh Fransson‘s New Wave Quilt

I love it when blogs include those little badges you can paste onto your own blog! Wish I had one for the New Wave quilt! Also wish I knew what the etiquette is for posting images from other people’s Flickr when you’re inspired by them – I see other people doing it, but I don’t want to infringe on anyone… I see on other blogs that people post a mosaic of a whole bunch of Flickr photos they’re inspired by…how do you DO that, and do you ask permission?
